OECD GSF report on Very Large Research Infrastructures (VLRI)

The OECD Global Science Forum (GSF) project on Very Large Research Infrastructures (VLRI) has recently come to an end. The project has produced a report with policy recommendations ( Amongst others, the report addresses the new challenges faced by managers, operators, funders and decision-makers in developing and supporting VLRIs and in establishing long-term strategies.

VLRI play a unique role in modern science. They are facilities that combine a degree of uniqueness (the RI is unique or quasi unique worldwide and provides world-leading capabilities), complexity (the RI is highly complex in its organisational structure, technology and/or operation and its scale is usually very large in terms of the required human and/or capital resources) and an international dimension (the RI possesses an international dimension which is reflected in its governance, its operational footprint and/or user base).

The report gives recommendations (p. 8-10)  on a variety of topics:

  • Strategy and Planning
  • Governance and Management
  • Business Model and Life-Cycle Funding
  • Impact
  • Datamanagement, including data sharing and access
  • Policy Support within the VLRI Ecosystem

Please respond to this survey by 15 November 2023. Your feedback will be a valuable addition to the report and will be communicated to the OECD GSF, forming the basis for future cooperation on other GSF projects.
