The OECD Global Science Forum (GSF) project on Very Large Research Infrastructures (VLRI) has recently come to an end. The project has produced a report with policy recommendations (https://doi.org/10.1787/2b93187f-en). Amongst others, the report addresses the new challenges faced by managers, operators, funders and decision-makers in developing and supporting VLRIs and in establishing long-term strategies.
VLRI play a unique role in modern science. They are facilities that combine a degree of uniqueness (the RI is unique or quasi unique worldwide and provides world-leading capabilities), complexity (the RI is highly complex in its organisational structure, technology and/or operation and its scale is usually very large in terms of the required human and/or capital resources) and an international dimension (the RI possesses an international dimension which is reflected in its governance, its operational footprint and/or user base).
The report gives recommendations (p. 8-10) on a variety of topics:
- Strategy and Planning
- Governance and Management
- Business Model and Life-Cycle Funding
- Impact
- Datamanagement, including data sharing and access
- Policy Support within the VLRI Ecosystem
Please respond to this survey by 15 November 2023. Your feedback will be a valuable addition to the report and will be communicated to the OECD GSF, forming the basis for future cooperation on other GSF projects.
